Where in the world is Mrs. Lockman’s class this week?
This week, our explorers landed in Mexico!
Students researched famous landmarks, population, and food, then cracked into the brilliance of Mayan math to design their very own secret codes. 🔢✨
📚 We also wrapped up Chapter 1 of A Wrinkle in Time and used text evidence to imagine Mrs. Whatsit through a creative STEM challenge. 🎨🔬
☀️ Finally, we explored the science behind Chichen Itza’s moving shadow, discovering how light travels in a straight line and engineering our own shadow-casting structures. 🏛️🌑
Another week of discovery, creativity, and global adventure! 🌍💡

🌍✈️ This week Mrs. Lockman’s travelers landed in Canada! 🇨🇦
Students put their critical thinking to work as they researched and ranked different insulation materials, an important skill for surviving the cold Arctic. ❄️ They also dove into Chapter 1 of A Wrinkle in Time, sparking curiosity about journeys and discovery. 📖✨
Next, they became architects, designing detailed blueprints of shelters that could withstand Canada’s Arctic climate. 🏠✏️ Each blueprint included labeled insulation choices, and students calculated the square footage of insulation their shelters would need blending STEM + reading + global exploration all in one adventure!
Our journey has only just begun. Where will learning take us next? 🌎💡

🔬📚 Fifth Grade Science in Action 📚🔬
Mrs. Dallmann’s fifth grade scientists engaged in a comprehensive review of Chapter 1 in preparation for their upcoming unit assessment. Students applied the scientific method across multiple tasks to strengthen both content knowledge and critical thinking skills.
📝 They summarized investigation articles aligned to each letter of SCIENCE, reinforcing reading comprehension and scientific literacy.
🎨 Students constructed a vocabulary graffiti wall, visually connecting and internalizing key terms.
👀 They practiced distinguishing between observations and inferences, supported by images and collaborative discussion.
🚁 Through a controlled copter experiment, they explored the impact of wingspan on flight, identifying and analyzing independent and dependent variables.
🧩 Finally, students applied their understanding of the scientific method to solve a logic-based riddle, demonstrating transfer of knowledge to novel situations.
This active and integrative review ensured students were well-prepared for assessment while fostering deeper connections between vocabulary, process skills, and inquiry-based science. 🌟🔍

🌍 Where in the World is Mrs. Lockman’s Class? 🌍
This year, Mrs. Lockman’s class is embarking on an ambitious academic journey—Around the World in 38 Days—integrating geography, literacy, coding, and critical thinking skills. Each week, we’ll “travel” to a new location, applying cross-curricular learning to deepen our understanding of the world.
To launch our adventure, students:
📚 Analyzed the definition and characteristics of continents versus countries and discussed their significance in global studies.
🗺️ Applied strategic thinking to design a travel route that reached all seven continents, considering efficiency and geography.
🤖 Programmed a Bee-Bot to navigate a large-scale world map, reinforcing spatial reasoning and sequencing skills.
📖 Engaged in a close reading preview of our novel study, A Wrinkle in Time, making connections between literature and our global exploration theme.
Our first “stop” set the foundation for a year of inquiry, problem-solving, and global awareness. We look forward to sharing each week’s destination and the learning it inspires!

Mrs. Yost's class ended the year with a fun Bubble Science experiment! 🫧 They observed how bubbles formed using a variety of solutions and had a blast testing which ones worked best. A bubbly way to wrap up a great year of learning! 🧪🎉

Our 4th graders had a blast celebrating their hard work on the ELA FAST! Those who scored a 4 or 5 got the sweet reward of being able to pie their teacher in the face! 🥧😄 Way to go, you earned it!
