CVA Learning in Action: Student Thinking in the Chat!
Sometimes, some of the best learning conversations happen right in the chat box!
During a recent live lesson, Ms. Hall's 10th-grade ELA students quickly reviewed figurative language before diving deeper into how authors use these literary devices to create mood and meaning. Students identified different devices, shared their own examples, and even questioned whether an example could represent more than one!
We love seeing students share ideas, think critically, and learn from one another. It's a great reminder that student voice doesn't always require a microphone! Meaningful learning and participation can happen in many ways in a virtual classroom.

Yesterday, our Vipers showed up in ORANGE to celebrate kindness, acceptance, and inclusion for Unity Day, and now it is time to announce our winners.
Congratulations to our student winners, Blue (wearing a lot of orange in front of an orange tree) AND Tramar (who made an orange unity poster to go along with his orange shirt), and our faculty winner, Mr. Gann! We hope you enjoy something delicious at Chick-fil-A.

Great things are happening in Gator Country! Ms. Heather Sieger recently visited the Lakeside Junior High learning lab, connecting with students, checking on their progress, and working alongside lab facilitators to support student success.
Ms. Sieger is an incredible resource for our school-based learning labs, providing guidance, troubleshooting challenges, and helping facilitators navigate Edgenuity and CVA Flex courses. Her work strengthens the partnership between CVA and our schools while ensuring students have the support they need to keep moving forward.

It's National Teen Driver Safety Week, and at Clay Virtual Academy, we're helping our students take the first steps toward becoming safe, confident, and responsible drivers!
DID YOU KNOW? Florida's driver education requirements have changed!
Students under age 18 applying for their first learner's license must now complete an approved driver education course before getting their permit.
The good news? CVA offers Driver Education! Students can begin the course as early as age 14½, giving them a head start before they're eligible for their learner's license at age 15!
🚦 Learn the rules of the road and understand what it takes to be a responsible driver.
🚘 Build safe driving habits that will last long after you earn your license.

Most importantly, we had the opportunity to spotlight the dedicated teachers and staff who bring these systems to life every day. Our success is no accident. It's the result of intentional planning, strong relationships, and a shared commitment to doing what's best for students.

During a recent 6th Grade ELA live lesson, Clay Virtual Academy teacher Ms. Lerin De Medici guided students through an engaging analysis of Robert Frost's poem Acquainted with the Night. Students explored how imagery, repetition, and word choice shape the poem's mood and meaning. Through thoughtful discussion, they shared their interpretations, supported their ideas with textual evidence, and built on one another's thinking.
What stood out was the level of student engagement and the opportunities for students to do the thinking! Rather than simply identifying literary elements, students were challenged to explain how and why the author's choices influenced their understanding of the poem.

But here's something I want you to think about this week: Are you completing your assignments, or are you really learning from them?
There's a difference, and it matters.
Imagine you're working through a science lesson and come across a concept you don't completely understand. You might be able to answer the questions and earn a good grade, but could you explain that concept to someone else? Could you apply what you learned to a different situation?
That's where real learning happens!
One of the best ways to check your understanding is to try explaining what you've learned in your own words. If you can explain how something works, why an answer makes sense, or what you would do differently next time, you're doing more than memorizing information. You're building understanding that will help you in future lessons, assessments, and even outside the classroom.
Here's your challenge for this week:

October 19th–23rd, 2026 is National School Bus Safety Week! This year’s national theme is "Safe Rides, Everyday Heroes." 💛
Keeping our students safe on the way to and from school is a community effort. Please keep these key reminders in mind:
For Drivers: Always stop when yellow school bus lights flash red and the stop arm is extended. Slow down in school zones and eliminate all distractions.
For Students: Stay visible! Be extra cautious around the 10-foot area surrounding the bus and always stand three big steps back from the curb while waiting.

Clay County District Schools has officially been named one of only 18 Academically High-Performing School Districts in the entire state of Florida for the 2025–2026 school year by the Florida Department of Education!
This prestigious recognition reflects our dedication to academic excellence, operational accountability, and student success across every classroom.
To earn and maintain this status, school districts must meet rigorous state benchmarks:
Academic Excellence: Earn an "A" district grade for two consecutive years without any district-operated school receiving an "F."
Classroom Focus: Fully comply with state class size requirements.
Fiscal Responsibility: Maintain clean annual financial audits with no material weaknesses or compliance issues.
This milestone is a direct result of the commitment of our teachers, support professionals, administrators, and district leadership under Superintendent David Broskie, paired with the hard work of our students and the steadfast support of our families and community.
