What is Founders’ Week?
Founders’ Week is Clay County’s local celebration of our founding documents, individuals, and virtues. It is celebrated throughout the month of September, but the school district’s activities are concentrated during the week of September 26-30. This year’s theme is Presidents.

How is it different from Constitution Day or Celebrate Freedom Week?
Constitution Day is a federal observance of the day the Constitution was signed. On September 17 each year, across the country, students receive instruction on the importance of our Constitution and the rights and obligations of American citizens.
Celebrate Freedom Week is designated by Florida law as the last full week in September. At that time, public school districts throughout the state are required provide three hours of instruction on the Declaration of Independence, and students recite the Declaration each day.
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.”
How are the schools observing Founders’ Week?
Each social studies teacher is provided with a packet of in-class activities that are aligned to standards. Other suggestions include:
- Writing a letter to an elected official, such as the mayor, governor, member of Congress, or president
- Sharing facts about presidents on the school’s morning announcements
- Learning the lyrics to “Hail to the Chief”.
- Holding a class election
- Taking a virtual trip to the Supervisor of Elections office
- Discussing the qualities of a good leader
- Studying vocabulary such as “self-evident”, “unalienable”, “deriving”, and “consent”
- Interviewing a veteran
Elementary students are also invited to participate in a districtwide art contest.
